Notes on Double A Paper

Whew! It's the end of a very busy month!

And as an added bonus: my pens came back after the CI treatment! :D

Let's celebrate with a short note on paper.

Today's post will talk about Double A paper! I bought a ream hearing that it was FP friendly, and boy, it did not disappoint!

Two pictures to show this:

Pelikan Hub Singapore 2016

The event that's been on the pen enthusiast's mind this past week are the Pelikan Hubs.

Pelikan Hubs is a yearly event, where pen enthusiasts meet up at a venue on a date specified by Pelikan. The meet up is organised by someone chosen by Pelikan, the Hubmaster, who will find a venue and inform participants about it. Pelikan send along some door gifts for participants who come and shares a presentation. Then everyone has fun talking and playing with pens, inks and paper!

This year's Hub was held this past Friday, 16 September at 1830 local time. It was done at Pelikan Singapore's office!

Now what's an event without photos? So here goes!

Waiting for the event to start!

Short Review of Muji B5 Notebook

Well, technically it wouldn't be a review in the strictest sense, but rather just some thoughts after trying out this notebook.

Just a little background. These notebooks were bought because I wanted to give them as gifts to my friends who have April birthdays! (April is a good month, I have three friends who were born in April whee!)

So I went to Muji, knowing that (most of) its products were fountain pen friendly.

I ended up with a B5, 80 page notebook that was made of 58% recycled paper that cost me $4.30 a book.

Anyhow, after writing in it, I think they're great! Plus, it helps that they can be fully turned about 360 degrees (if you're into that kind of thing)

Without further ado, some pictures!

Pen used: Lamy 2000. Ink used: Pelikan Edelstein Tanzanite (not colour corrected)

Pen used: Pelikan Pharo. Ink used: Pelikan Edelstein Amethyst (not colour corrected)

Pen used: Pelikan M605. Ink used: Noodler's Liberty Elysium (not colour corrected)

Tag to look out for on the notebook!

I hope this was useful! I can't recommend it enough - great product that's affordable and durable!

Friday's Goodies - Vintage Rhodia Notebook Wallets

Some time back, I chanced on All Things Stationery's post on a webshop called Youse that sold vintage stationery. In her post, she said she got some vintage Rhodia Notebook Wallets from the site. For me, it was love at first sight. Being a lover of history and historical memorabilia,  I had to get those Notebook Wallets! So with a few clicks, I paid for two of them and waited eagerly.

That was last Wednesday. And today, they landed in my mailbox <3 <3 <3

Did I mention they look better in person?

Let's start with a little history of Rhodia. Rhodia was founded in Lyon, France back in 1934 by two brothers Samuel and Jean-Abel Verilhac. In Lyon there was the Rhône river and the people born in the region were known as Rhodaniens. This was where the name Rhodia came from. The logo was designed by Maria-Antonia, the wife of one of the brothers, and shows two spruce trees, which represented the two brothers. A closer look at it reveals that the two trees are not identical and they are linked by a line to show that the brothers worked together.

Till today, all of Rhodia's paper is still made in France. In 1997, they were bought by Clairefontaine and production transferred to Mulhouse, in Alsace, France. The orange cover dates back to 1934, and remains unchanged to this day.

Okay, now that the history is out of the way, let's talk about these two vintage Rhodia Notebook Wallets. They were made in the 1960s and probably used in school. There's 50 A4 sheets inside each wallet. But I'm not going to use them much. Vintage paper being vintage, if you use one there's one less, so I'll definitely keep most of it. I'll put modern paper in the wallets and bring it around on my adventures!

Without further ado, some pictures!

There's still a few wallets left on Youse's site, but be quick because fastest fingers first! These are rare and if you like them, go get it as soon as possible! Thanks for reading!

OMG I've just made the most screwed notebook ever.

On the good side, at least it's refillable! And I don't think it will fall apart.

PAPER:

1. Muji

Location: Various. Check out Muji Singapore's site for more info

Brands carried: House brand

Price: $

Although Muji only carries their house brand paper, their paper is largely FP friendly, in line with their motto of providing good quality products at a reasonable price. They come in looseleaf and notebooks, in sizes of A5, B4 and A4. Looseleaf A4 is my choice of paper for schoolwork.

2. Kinokuniya

Location: Ngee Ann City, Liang Court, Bugis Junction. JEM

Brands carried: Midori, Rhodia

Price: $-$$

Carries the Midori Traveler's notebook inserts for you to refill your Midori Traveler's notebook. Rhodia is a new addition to their shelves.

3. NBC

Location: Various. Check out http://www.nbcstationerygifts.com/#!singapore-stores/c1pvf

Brands carried (FPs): Lamy, Pelikan, Platinum

Brands carried (Paper): Campus, Maruman, Midori, Tomoe River Loose Leaf

Price: $-$$

The Japanese paper are value for money, Campus and Maruman perform better than Muji paper, but I find Muji paper sufficient for my uses. It is up to you to decide what you need. Also carries the Platinum Preppy, a disposable FP. They have also recently started carrying Tomoe River Loose Leaf after repeat requests from customers, so for your TR fix, you can go to NBC (if it's nearer for you), instead of having to go to Kovan!

4. Tokyu Hands

Location: Westgate, Orchard Central (Nearest MRT: Jurong East, Somerset)

Brands carried (FPs): Lamy, Pilot, Platinum, Sailor

Brands carried (Paper): Life Noble, Maruman, Midori

Price: $-$$$

A fancy shop specialising in all things Japan, you'll be able to find notebooks of various brands here. There is also a place for you to try out the notebooks before purchase! However, prices of pens here are usually higher than other places, so advice is to go to other stores for your pen purchases.

5. Overjoyed

Location: 89 Short Street, Golden Wall Centre, #B1-08 (Nearest MRT: Rochor)

Brands carried (FPs): Diplomat, Faber-Castell, Kaweco, Lamy, Montegrappa, Ohto, Schneider, TWSBI, Pelikan, Pilot, Platinum, Sailor, Worther

Brands carried (Paper): Rhodia, Clairefontaine, G. Lalo

Brands carried (Ink): J Herbin, Koh-I-Noor

Price: $-$$

The only shop in Singapore that sells Rhodia and Clairefontaine currently. One should try the paper out when one gets the opportunity to, however in my opinion the Japanese paper can match up to Rhodia and Clairefontaine, so whether or not you should get it, it's up to you. My favourite paper for letter writing comes from here (Clairefontaine Triomphe).

OTHERS:

1. Popular Bookstores

Location: Various

Brands carried (FPs): Parker, Platinum, Sheaffer

Brands carried (Paper): Double A, PaperOne

Brands carried (Inks): Parker, Pelikan

Price: $-$$

My personal choice of A4 paper (PaperOne Premium Presentation 100gsm) comes from here. It stocks a little collection of fountain pens and some ink. A good place to look at if you have one around your home.

2. Mustafa

Location: Mustafa Centre, 145 Syed Alwi Road (Nearest MRT: Farrer Park)

Brands carried (FPs): Cross, Hero, Lamy, MB, Parker, Pelikan, Pilot, Sheaffer

Brands carried (Paper): Double A

Brands carried (Ink): Parker, Pelikan, Waterman

Price: $-$$$$

The only 24 hour open shopping centre in Singapore, this place is definitely worth a visit. There are three pen counters (Basement, Level 1, Level 4) though, so you'll have to do some walking around.

I hope this was useful. As usual, do leave a comment if you so wish.
