These days I'm leaning way towards blues, or inks with some component of blues in it. The other colours inked are for contrast purposes
The event that's been on the pen enthusiast's mind this past week are the Pelikan Hubs.

Pelikan Hubs is a yearly event, where pen enthusiasts meet up at a venue on a date specified by Pelikan. The meet up is organised by someone chosen by Pelikan, the Hubmaster, who will find a venue and inform participants about it. Pelikan send along some door gifts for participants who come and shares a presentation. Then everyone has fun talking and playing with pens, inks and paper!

This year's Hub was held this past Friday, 16 September at 1830 local time. It was done at Pelikan Singapore's office!

Now what's an event without photos? So here goes!

Well, I guess I was one today.

How early? How about first in Singapore early?

I am the first in the country to get my hands on this Pacific Dawn at the Golden Gate! ;)

This was launched at the 2016 San Francisco Pen Show that ran from 26-28 August. The Singapore launch was today (2 September)

The background story to this ink is this:

"Pacific Dawn refers to the same Sun starting its journey across the Pacific from San Francisco to Singapore. This ink is a distinct blue like the dark blue one sees in the ocean at Dawn. When dried, a few drops of water like the morning mist will show red at the borders as if dawn has arrived

Noodler's Pacific Dawn at The Golden Gate is the Straits Pen Exclusive for the San Francisco Pen Show. A Bulletproof Blue ink with the Halo of Dawn, this includes a double sided label of Fort Mason on one side and the Golden Gate Bridge on the reverse. (Note that the Blue is bulletproof but the red element is not)"

(Extracted from http://aws.straitspen.com/shop/inks/noodler-s-ink/noodler-s-pacific-dawn-at-the-golden-gate.html)

So my first thoughts, hmmm an interesting blue black (some call it a blue grey)... bulletproof somemore!

The first ink that popped into my mind for comparison was 54th Massachusetts. But that has green in it. Pity I don't have Bad Belted Kingfisher or Bad Blue Heron to compare it to.

It's definitely wetter than 54th though, which is a welcome. I found 54th too dry, which is why I don't use it despite the nice colour!

This picture shows the red halo (I got ink stains while I refilled my pen and lo and behold, the red stain)

Here it's really obvious where the halo is....

The ink is used on three types of paper - 100gsm printer paper, Rhodia Grid and Tomoe River White

The first two is what I do my ink review on. The last showcases the halo (refer to previous two pictures).

So to the review proper...

This one is about IotY 2016 Aquamarine.

I would call this the ink version of Lamy 2000.

What do I mean? I mean Aquamarine wasn't love at first sight, but upon the continuous use of it... it just grew on me.

Love at second sight <3 <3 <3

I've put it in the Danitrio (refer to previous post for more info on the Dani). I find Aquamarine a good match for the body!

My personal choice for Aquamarine would be something a tad brighter than what Pelikan has produced. However, having said that, I still like this ink. It pushes me to explore a different shade from my usual repertoire of rich bright blues.

Here are the pics!
Life's been quite busy these days... also I didn't get new stuff so nothing to talk about :P

Today's piece is on the Danitrio Cum Laude. Yes again. It's not deja vu kay!

I lost my original one and the replacement came in yesterday, hence the post.

Which is a little strange. Why? Because I had originally wanted the blue grey version, but my first Cum Laude was a brown one. It slowly grew on me, but I lost that, and now here I am, with the colour I've wanted all along. Strange how fate deals out its cards huh?

Currently it's being filled up with a blend I came up with. I was looking for a grey that wouldn't be too light (not going for the pencil effect here!) and so I mixed grey with a touch of black - the exact ratio is 4 to 1.

Pictures pictures of this beauty! Did I tell you I was in love?

Look out for the next post.... on my favourite brand!

It's called "From the Stacks: Highlights of the National Library", and showcases the best of the library's many years of collections!

They range from WWII comics, the Malaya/Singapore newspapers, maps of harbours, and my personal favourite: the letters of Raffles.

Here are some pics! (They're all from the letters of Raffles section. I'm bias as always)

Just a little background. These notebooks were bought because I wanted to give them as gifts to my friends who have April birthdays! (April is a good month, I have three friends who were born in April whee!)

So I went to Muji, knowing that (most of) its products were fountain pen friendly.

I ended up with a B5, 80 page notebook that was made of 58% recycled paper that cost me $4.30 a book.

Anyhow, after writing in it, I think they're great! Plus, it helps that they can be fully turned about 360 degrees (if you're into that kind of thing)

Without further ado, some pictures!
Thank you for indulging a Luddite!)

Hi all,

It's just over the midway mark of February, and I'm happy to say I've finished this year's challenge already!

Yes I know it's early, because I tweaked the rules a little.

I have indeed written 29 different pieces and delivered them, but many of these 29 were written early, in Jan.

Well, I guess you could call it cheating yes, because I'm lazy to go out everyday to mail a piece. Can't really blame me for that now, can ya :P

Still, I'm going to continue writing and replying letters throughout the month! It's nice to see letters in the mailbox. I'm happy for having friends who take the effort to write! I'm thankful for these letters, so keep them coming! :DUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3864396365994101334.post-84241216319138939842016-02-01T02:00:00.000+08:002016-10-13T02:56:53.310+08:00The daily carryEver since I had a good talk with my ink magician friend about decluttering my life, I've been meaning to work on getting rid of some of my pens.

Of course, I haven't gotten far with that yet, but I've at least confirmed my 8 daily carry pens. Why 8? Because I have two 4-pen cases, with 4 pens being the max number you can have in a case and still have that case fit in your pocket.

From now, if I want to get a new pen, I will have to get rid of another, to free up one existing slot, be it by gifting the pen or selling it.

Latest Update (October 2016):

These days I'm carrying five pens on me... The current five are the Pelikan (Noodler's Liberty Elysium), the 400NN (Black Swan in Icelandic Minty Bathwater), the Pilot (Noodler's Upper Ganges Blue), the Danitrio Cum Laude (Noodler's Pacific Dawn at the Golden Gate). and TWSBI 580AL Blue (Pelikan Edelstein Aventurine).

The handmade fountain pen my parents bought (Mont Tortoise Russet Cocktail) now resides in my pencilcase.

The Craftsman and Pharo are out of ink and sit at home. The Eco is sold, to be replaced with a 580AL. The M200 and Platinum are currently not with me. When they return, I will decommission the M200 - it shall be a souvenir to my pen days.

Future acquisition plans:
1. Pelikan M605 Dark Blue (and then I'll sell the Blue Silver)
2. Lamy 27 and/or 99 (predecessor to the Lamy 2000)

Without further ado, an introduction to my daily 8.

1. Pelikan M605 Blue Silver - A nice fit for my hand, since I don't like posting my pens. The blue and silver complements each other very nicely and it brings me joy to use this pen.

2. Pilot Custom Heritage 92 - A reliable workhorse, this has quickly become joint favourites with 1. I especially like seeing how the ink sloshes around in the demo.

3. Lamy 2000 - I have to say, I didn't like it initially. However, it slowly grew on me - to the extent that when I lost it, I searched for a replacement. And now, I have another piece again, making me a happy person.

4. Pelikan Pharo - My first nibmeister customed nib. I bought it for the Binder nib and it performs beautifully. I like it and use it when I want a little extra something, flourishing in my writing.

5. TWSBI Eco - The value for money demo. Although not as beautiful as the Diamond 580, it is cheaper and more robust (ie less prone to having parts cracking) due to its one piece construction. The 1.1mm nib comes in useful when writing Christmas cards.

6. Sheaffer Touchdown Craftsman - I won this last year during FPD. I admit, it is not something I would have bought for myself. But like the Lamy, it has grown on me. It's a beautiful little piece with a true 14k fine nib and looks great despite its age.

7. Pelikan M200 demo - My first pen upon getting back into the FP world. A sentimental piece, and one that brings back fond memories.

8. Platinum 3776 - The blue of this pen is mesmerising. I find myself taking it out to look at because of its immense beauty. Yes, I'm drunk on this colour! Writes with just a touch of feedback, something to my tastes.

Which do I like most? 1 and 2, but they all have their place and usage. I love them all.

PS. Happy February! And for all of you InCoWriMo-ers outside, here goes!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3864396365994101334.post-34373960447340640542016-01-27T02:18:00.004+08:002016-01-27T02:18:59.231+08:00International Correspondence Writing Month (InCoWriMo)InCoWriMo is almost upon us! I am excited for it :D

InCoWriMo lasts for the whole of February and challenges one to handwrite and deliver a card, note, postcard or letter to someone every day of February.

And because this is a leap year, we get one extra day and one extra piece ;)

It's my third year doing this!

Ain't easy, this InCoWriMo, but hey, it's a reason to break out my pens and inks so... Challenge accepted!

If anyone reading this would like a letter, please leave me a comment with a means of contacting you! I will try to write back, especially if you're local! :)

Have fun doing InCoWriMo! I know I will :)Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3864396365994101334.post-44795492645634865852016-01-20T14:50:00.000+08:002016-01-20T14:49:29.424+08:00Hunting down the elusive Daiso FP!After a long time (and spanning two countries!) - I finally got my hands on a Daiso fountain pen last night.

Being elusive - so no, no pics from me ;)

Daiso is a Japanese lifestyle store that has many branches in several countries. Most of the items they carry cost $2 here, which is pretty affordable in itself.

Since they carried a house brand FP, and because of iI mits generally positive reviews, I decided to get one to try out.

My first impression of it was, hey it's surprisingly light!

Then it was: I like how easy it is to remove the nib and feed! (Let's just say some pens have their nib and feed glued in :O)

Previously I had gotten a Platinum Riviere from Daiso also, and while I liked the nib, I found its plastic body to be way too fragile.

So I swopped out the nibs of these two pens! The house brand FP now carries the Platinum nib, and writes awesome!

I like that pen. It outwrites its competition anytime. For the price I really have nothing to complain about!

Now that I've had my taste of it - I think I'll pass it on to someone else... so I can poison them into FPs...Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3864396365994101334.post-13590085350947267762015-12-21T15:35:00.000+08:002015-12-21T15:35:01.125+08:00Top 10 Christmas Inks! It's almost a month since I last posted :O

December has always been a month of reflection and silence, so please indulge me. This will be the only post for the month and the last for 2015.

Will I continue posting in 2016? That is still an unknown, and to be left until a further time.

Let's just dive straight into today's topic.

December being the month of Christmas, I decided to do something different... like introducing my top 10 Christmas inks.

They only include red or green inks (yes I'm a bore, I chose only traditional colours).

The ten inks are (in no particular order): J Herbin 1670 Emerald of Chivor, Noodler's Bloody Mary, Visconti Red, Diamine Red Dragon, Pelikan Edelstein Jade, Noodler's Antietam, Noodler's Tiananmen and Diamine Oxblood, Pelikan Edelstein Aventurine and Pelikan Edelstein Ruby.

Bonus entrant: Pelikan Edelstein Garnet.

For the top, we have J Herbin 1670 Emerald of Chivor, Noodler's Bloody Mary, Visconti Red, Diamine Red Dragon.

Second layer shows Pelikan Edelstein Jade, Noodler's Antietam, Noodler's Tiananmen and Diamine Oxblood.

The base of the tree shows Pelikan Edelstein Aventurine, Pelikan Edelstein Garnet and Pelikan Edelstein Ruby.

The trunk is coloured with Diamine Ancient Copper!

Today I present the last pair: Ruby and Sapphire

Ruby is a typical red with little shading and a little water resistance. Could be used in marking since there is little threat or danger being conveyed (杀伤力). Good in a broad wet nib.

Contrary to what the picture shows, Sapphire is actually a blurple (purplish blue). Not my personal cup of tea, however there seems to be a market for it.

I hope you've enjoyed this series of reviews! Please leave a comment if you have any feedback. Until next time!

No it isn't a review, already did one previously.

I thought I'll just chat about this ink.

If you know me, you'll know I'm a big fan of blue. A really big fan. Perhaps it's the little rebellious streak in me, to fight against the "rule" that teachers prefer black. Perhaps it's the range of blues that one can get, from sky blue, baby blue to even midnight blue. But whatever it is, it is THE ink colour for me.

So, upon my journey into the FP world, I went searching for a good blue that I wanted to use permanently. It started with a sample of Noodler's Liberty Elysium (LE) from Sunny (of straitspen.com). I fell in love with that rich blue tone. My all time favourite ink. Did I mention it was water resistant too? Thus, I plunged in, and now have 1.5 bottles of the stuff.

Fast forward to October 2015. I received four ink samples from a lovely FPNer kpatters5274. In it, there was Noodler's Tiananmen, Noodler's Antietam, UGB and R&K Alt-Bordeaux. The reddish toned Tiananmen, Antietam and Alt-Bordeaux didn't do much to me (maybe because I've already found my perfect red in Pelikan Edelstein Garnet. If I want something more muted, Diamine Oxblood).

But that blue. That UGB. It had my attention.

Strange really. Come to think of it, I've only really been interested in bright blues. Yet here was a muted, chalky blue that had me spellbound.

How spellbound? It's my new favourite ink and it's constantly competing with LE for use. Oops.

The good news is, I'm getting a bottle of it at the next pen meet.
The bad news is, I cleaned out one barrel in 3 days. That's even faster than my school days.

Let the battle of the blues begin.

Today we talk about the two greens in the series - Jade and Aventurine.

Pelikan Edelstein Jade

Jade is a bright green, leaning towards a teal! I like that though, it brings some variety to the range of greens and spices up the life. One does not have to go for a boring and monotonous flora green, one can pick Jade!

Pelikan Edelstein Aventurine

Aventurine is a true to earth, deep rich green. A saturated colour, it does conjure up images of grass, especially that of freshly-cut grass, its smells and its richness. A traditional green that will suit a Christmas card.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3864396365994101334.post-26798592393614747142015-11-12T17:12:00.000+08:002015-11-16T18:44:56.764+08:00Noodler's Henry Hudson Blue ReviewNoodler's Henry Hudson Blue is a Fountain Pen Hospital exclusive introduced back in 2009. I've finally gotten around to doing a review of it!

Sir Henry Hudson (died 1611) was an English sea explorer and navigator in the early 17th Century. He made two attempts to find a Northwest Passage to Cathay (modern day China) via a route above the Arctic Circle. Hudson explored the modern New York metropolitan area while in the employment of the Dutch East Indies Company, laying the foundation for Dutch colonisation in the region.

Everyone has one. Most people have different ones. You share one with a few others. What is it?

I'm talking about birthdays.

Yours truly recently celebrated a birthday - and my ink magician friend worked his magic again.

Enter Russet Cocktail. Russet for its colour, and Cocktail because of how it was shaken after mixing.

The second in the Exotic series (My arbitrary name for it), RC amazes yet again.

My request was for a orangey/amberish kind of colour. RC hits all the right notes!

It's slightly darker than another of my favourite tones - Pelikan Edelstein Amber, but it has way better water resistance.

And of course, a picture. How could we not have one.

Indeed a nice colour. And definitely limited edition - only one bottle exists.

Onyx is a black - not the darkest black out there, but certainly not a grey either. There is a hint of grey in it, yet it still stays true to being a black. It's on the hydrophobic side though, just put water far far far away from it.

Mandarin is a cheery orange - not bright like Diamine Pumpkin, or Sailor Apricot, but it has its position in the stable for when one wants a cheerful (but not eye-searing!) orange. A broader nib will suit it though.
Look out for Part 3 and 4 - coming soon!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3864396365994101334.post-89545105418348862182015-10-30T14:30:00.000+08:002015-10-31T01:19:36.539+08:00Friday's Goodies - Vintage Rhodia Notebook WalletsSome time back, I chanced on All Things Stationery's post on a webshop called Youse that sold vintage stationery. In her post, she said she got some vintage Rhodia Notebook Wallets from the site. For me, it was love at first sight. Being a lover of history and historical memorabilia, I had to get those Notebook Wallets! So with a few clicks, I paid for two of them and waited eagerly.

That was last Wednesday. And today, they landed in my mailbox <3 <3 <3

Did I mention they look better in person?

Let's start with a little history of Rhodia. Rhodia was founded in Lyon, France back in 1934 by two brothers Samuel and Jean-Abel Verilhac. In Lyon there was the Rhône river and the people born in the region were known as Rhodaniens. This was where the name Rhodia came from. The logo was designed by Maria-Antonia, the wife of one of the brothers, and shows two spruce trees, which represented the two brothers. A closer look at it reveals that the two trees are not identical and they are linked by a line to show that the brothers worked together.

Till today, all of Rhodia's paper is still made in France. In 1997, they were bought by Clairefontaine and production transferred to Mulhouse, in Alsace, France. The orange cover dates back to 1934, and remains unchanged to this day.

Okay, now that the history is out of the way, let's talk about these two vintage Rhodia Notebook Wallets. They were made in the 1960s and probably used in school. There's 50 A4 sheets inside each wallet. But I'm not going to use them much. Vintage paper being vintage, if you use one there's one less, so I'll definitely keep most of it. I'll put modern paper in the wallets and bring it around on my adventures!

Without further ado, some pictures!

Marine Bleu - Oldie but goldie

Marine Blue conjures up images of the dark, dark sea. It draws us deep into its mystery, and has an mysterious allure that cannot be explained.

The cure for anything is salt water: sweat, tears or the sea. ~Isak Dinesen

Whenever I feel down, I cycle out towards the pier, taking in the sea breeze. Indeed, I find that few things match the beauty of the ocean. Yet this ink is so attractive that I find it worthy of being coupled with the ocean.

This is however, not an ink you'll find in stores. I had a friend who gave me this concoction. If people who are adept with nib work are called nib wizards, this friend of mine must be called the ink magician. He has such a good sense towards ink mixing and colours that were he to start making ink like Konrad of KWZI ink fame, I would be his first customer.

Why the name Marine Blue? He was trying to replicate the beauty of the Souverän M605 Marine Blue. I think he nailed it.

Without further ado, the short review.

Yes, it does have a long dry time. But hey, it makes up with its water resistance. This resembles Diamine Midnight Blue, or even Omas Blue... albeit with water resistance. In fact, I like it so much I might just put off using Edelstein Tanzanite on my next refill...
After trying them all out... I think Upper Ganges Blue is going on my "To Buy" list!

Without further ado, some pictures!

The inks gifted were Noodler's Antietam, Tiananmen, Upper Ganges Blue and Rohrer and Klinger Alt-Bordeaux.

First up, Noodler's Antietam

Each post will be a Mini Review of a pair of Edelstein inks. Part 2 will feature Onyx and Mandarin, Part 3 will feature Jade and Aventurine, and Part 4 will feature Ruby and Sapphire.

Going first is my favourite of the eight - Tanzanite (blue black) and Topaz (bright blue).

Without further ado, the pictures!

Pelikan Edelstein Tanzanite

I like Tanzanite - it is a true blue black, unlike Pilot Blue Black which just looks blue, that doesn't fade, unlike Pelikan 4001 Blue Black which will turn grey in a matter of hours, and it dries fast enough.

And Topaz? I just like bright blues! This isn't so bright that it blinds (yes Baystate Blue I'm looking at ya) and it dries relatively quick. Did I mention that it's easy to clean out too? Ticks all of the boxes!

I hope this was useful. Leave a comment if you have any questions!

Essentially, what happens is Pelikan makes a colour each year and launches it around March. You'll have an entire year of this colour, then they stop making it. Each IotY is limited to one year only - if you want it after its run, you'll have to try eBay or FPN. Or if you're lucky, your local retailer might be able to get it for you. But why risk it? If you like the ink, go for it!

The IotY Series was kicked off with 2012's Turmaline (Plum), followed by Amber in 2013 (which coincided with Pelikan's 175th Anniversary), 2014's Garnet and with this year (2015)'s Amethyst.

BTW: Aquamarine is newly posted on the blog!
